Infiorata del Corpus Domini

The infiorata consists in the creation of colourful floral carpets with flower petals, leaves and seeds. The works, created on the occasion of the feast of Corpus Domini, consist of impressive carpets that are unravelled as the procession passes.

In a chronicle of 1736 it is said that it was customary for Corpus Domini to sprinkle the streets with flowers.

Since Corpus Domini in 1990, on 17 June, the Pro Loco Fucecchio has taken on the commitment and honour of carrying on this ancient tradition by passing on and disseminating this cultural heritage of Fucecchio to future generations. The Pro Loco has uninterruptedly carried on this tradition to this day and even in recent years marked by the serious pandemic, the infiorata was still built, although in a reduced form.

Program

The week of Corpus Domini begins on Wednesday with the arrival of the first flowers and the subdivision by type and colour; Thursdays and Fridays are dedicated to cutting the flower petals.

On the Saturday afternoon before Corpus Domini, the streets are closed to traffic and come alive with people who begin to prepare the work. Once the rugs of the little ones are finished, the work of the flower masters begins, helped by anyone who wants to help.

On Saturday night, work continues until Sunday morning to deliver the various carpets to the public, which as originally depicted sacred subjects or drawings on the subject.

On Corpus Domini day, at the end of the Solemn Mass celebrated in the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista, the procession begins at 11:00, whose path is articulated as it crosses the whole town in about an hour.

The infiorata remains visible all day on Sunday and despite the passage of the holy one, during the day it is always possible to admire its beauty, for an area of ​​about 1000 square metres.

We also make these works outside by promoting this art and the country. We were in Rome for St. Peter and Paul, in Assisi for the patron saint of Italy, in Montenero for the Madonna patron saint of Tuscany.

The Pro Loco is also a founding member of INFIORITALIA (Associazione Nazionale delle Infiorate Artistiche), the Municipality of Fucecchio is part of the ANCI Res Tipica “City of the Infiorata” project.
